When to Use Associated Press Formatting - 55th Edition

Many Wilmington University classes require the use of APA formatting for papers. However, for journalism and communications classes, you may be asked to use the Associated Press formatting.

For news writing courses and capstones, use the journalistic style and the Associated Press formatting.

This style is covered in the editing course and AP is the communication industry-standard style. When in doubt, ask your instructor.

Citation Resources - Associated Press

"The content of newspapers and other mass media is typically the result of many different writers and editors working together. AP style provides consistent guidelines for such publications in terms of grammar, spelling, punctuation and language usage. Some guiding principles behind AP style are:

  • Consistency
  • Clarity
  • Accuracy
  • Brevity

"AP style also aims to avoid stereotypes and unintentionally offensive language." (From the Purdue OWL site below)
