Get Items From Other Libraries

Who Can Place ILL Requests?

Faculty, staff and current students of Wilmington University are eligible to use the Interlibrary Loan service.
Alumni and community library users are not eligible.

What Can Be Requested?

Books (except textbooks), photocopies of journal articles (within the restrictions of copyright law), and many dissertations may be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

Materials generally not available include items on reserve, textbooks, ebooks, entire issues of journals and reference books.

How Many Items Can I Request?

You may request up to 25 items per semester. If your research requires more materials, please contact the Library.

The Library will process up to 5 requests per individual per day depending on the volume of requests.

How Long Does It Take?

We are committed to processing ILL requests in a timely manner. If you order an article from a journal that our Library does not own or it is unavailable electronically, we will ask a library that does own the journal to electronically send us a photocopy, which we will then forward to you in an email. This delivery method is called Web Delivery and is the fastest method of receiving an ILL request. It is possible for some web delivery articles to arrive within 24 hours.

Because we cannot control how quickly other libraries will respond to our request, it can take anywhere from 2 to 10 business days for your article or book to arrive. Please allow up to 2 weeks for books and dissertations to arrive.

During high volume periods, requests may take longer, so allow ample time. If any unusual problems arise that delay your request, you will be contacted.

Is There a Charge for ILL Requests?

Wilmington University makes every attempt to obtain materials free of charge and usually can. However, some libraries may charge for books or articles requested through Interlibrary Loan. If there is a charge for any item, you will be contacted first.

Dissertations and other materials may have restrictions. Check with ILL staff on how to purchase dissertations directly from ProQuest UMI. This pertains only to dissertations from other schools.

How Will My Material Arrive?

When the material is available, you will be notified by email.

Journal articles will be sent directly to your ILLiad account and can be viewed by clicking on 'Electronically Received Articles' beneath View on the Main Menu.

Books or other items will be sent to you using your preferred delivery method, 'Hold for Pickup' or 'Mail to Address'. You can change your preference in ILLiad under Change User Information. If you choose 'Hold for Pickup', materials will be held at the New Castle Wilmington University Library location. Go to the Library front desk to pickup your materials. If you would like to pick materials at the Wilson Graduate Center or Dover Learning Commons please call 1-800-451-5724 or email

You also may check the Information Desk in New Castle or call (800-451-5724) to see if an item is being held for you.

How Long May I Keep ILL Materials?

Journal articles can be viewed on your ILLiad account for 30 days. However the article can be saved to your computer or printed out at any time within the 30 days.

The due date for books, borrowed dissertations and other items is usually between 2-4 weeks. This is determined by the lending library, not the Wilmington University Library.

Books, borrowed dissertations and other items can be returned to the Library in person or by mail, on or before the due date. The Library covers all shipping charges.

If returning by mail, please allow extra time for delivery. You will be charged overdue fines of $1.00 per day, per item. Users will be billed for lost materials.

Can I Renew My Materials?

In most cases a renewal will be granted by the lending library.

If you would like to renew any borrowed items, you may request a renewal through ILLiad.

Log on to ILLiad and select 'Checked Out Items' beneath View on the Main Menu. Then click on the transaction number of the item you wish to renew. At the top of the page, click on 'Renew Request.'

Then enter in your Username to have a password reset email sent to you.
